Mehta started playing his first set of drums at age 8 in his spare room along to records. He later played in the big hall, situated next to music room in school, sometimes with his teacher on piano. Mehta studied at the university of Cambridge. Later on he started studying under Dave weckl for his mastery in the genre of Jazz-fusion which he is still pursuing. He is still studying Hindustani music (Laykari) under his guru, pandit Suresh Talwalkar ji. Starting out on the New Delhi pop, jazz and fusion scene in the early 2000s, Mehta soon began working with artists such as Jazz Connection, The commons, Crimson, Level 9 and HRH.
He was with the Groove Adda (Aditi Singh Sharma) band from 2007 to 2014. During this time he performed with many artists such as Farhan Akhtar, Ali Zafar, Rabbi Sher gill, and Shibani Kashyap to name a few. Later he joined Euphoria in 2014 which he is currently playing and touring with the band. He also appeared at Kapil Sharma show 2022 with the band. He said he “augmented his work with Euphoria by continuing his session work and appearing often with the all start big bands such as MTV unplugged, Coke studio (Pakistan). Mehta has released a series of his own music under the label vishalmehtamusic. His first recording for an album as leader was in 2017 – ALONE for his own band vishalmehtalive. This was followed by GUGATGU, single in 2019, and an EP- ONLY YOU in 2021. Later on, Mehta recorded MINUS DRUM TRACKS for the album Alone and Only you and re-released world-wide for the drummers to play over, He himself later played these tracks at drum clinics, workshops and master classes.
